There are something about a permit -the way it moves across the flats, its power, the stiletto-like fin showing high out of the water when it tails, the tall, flat body that seems so improbable on the shallow flats, the way it projects wariness and intelligence- that makes this fish incredibly charismatic and desirable. The best casters lose their loop control when they see a permit. The most patient of anglers make hurried, desperate attemps. It's hard to approach a tailing permit and stay cool.
To be a good fly fisher for permit, you have to like to hunt than you like to catch fish. You have to be above merely catching. Most good permit anglers have landed enough other fish that they no longer have to catch fish every time they go fishing; they don't need to return to the dock with stories.
To catch a permit, you have to hunt in areas a bit deeper than most bonefish water, places where it is harder to see fish and harder to pole the skiff. It's all about the thrill of the hunt with a permit thrown in as a bonus from time to time if you are good, or if you are lucky.
"What did you catch?"
"Nothing"
"Nothing?"
"Nothing"
"Not even a nibble?"
"No" with a smile
"Had a good time?"
"Oh yeah"
I've heard that dialogue a thousand times.
In te context of the fly fishing, I think of the permit fishing as a cult fish, and I like that, probably because I also like cult cars, cult music, and cult movies. You have to be a special to understand the subtleties. And when you do, you find yourself belonging to a small society thats speak a different language. It's cool.

Hay algo acerca del Permit -La forma en que se mueve a través de los flats, su poder, la cola en forma de estilete que muestra fuera del agua cuando hace "tailing", el tamaño, su cuerpo plano que parece imposible en aguas bajas, la forma en que proyecta cautela e inteligencia- que lo hace increíblemente carismático y deseable. Los mejores casters pierden el control de su loop cuando ven un permit, los pescadores más pacientes hacen intentos apresurados y desesperados. Es muy difícil acercarse a un permit "coleando" y mantener la calma.
Para ser un buen pescador de permits tiene que gustarte mas la caza que la pesca. Tienes que estar por encima de la captura en sí misma. La mayoría de los buenos pescadores de permits han capturado una cantidad suficiente de otros peces y por ello ya no sienten la obligación de capturar algún pez cada vez que salen a pescar; ellos ya no necesitan anécdotas para volver al puerto.
Para capturar un permit, tienes que pescar en aguas más profundas que donde encuentras al bonefish, lugares donde es más difícil ver a los peces y también empujar el skiff. Se trata solo de la emoción de cazar, obteniendo un permit como premio de tanto en tanto, si eres bueno o tienes la suficiente suerte.

He escuchado este diálogo una y mil veces.
En el contexto de la pesca con mosca, pienso en el Permit como un pez de culto y eso me gusta, probablemente porque también me gusta el culto a los autos, la música y las películas. Tienes que ser un poco especial para entender estas sutilezas y cuando lo haces te das cuenta que perteneces a un grupo que habla un lenguaje diferente. Es genial !
